How To Take MCT Oil
In this article I will teach you how to take MCT oil for the greatest benefits. After reading you will also know which, when, and how much MCTs you need to take, depending on your personal goals and needs.
What Is MCT Oil?
Basically speaking, MCT Oil, short for medium chain triglycerides are fats found in many foods including grass fed butter, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, cheese and milk (if you don’t have allergies to dairy). They’re most abundantly found in coconut and palm oils. These are the primary sources of MCTs used for nutritional supplements.
Types of MCTs
There are 4 different types of medium chain triglycerides:Caproic acid, Caprylic acid,Capric acid,Lauric acid. The 2 that produce the most benefits are capric and caprylic acids. Both enable the body to increase the production of ketones – a natural source of energy that our brain and body loves – resulting in detectable benefits. You’ll notice more mental and physical energy, enhanced mood and increased endurance during your workout.
Not all fats are created equal!
Another unique quality that makes MCTs distinct among fats, is that they’re used as an instant source of energy instead of being stored for later use! This is often the fate of other fats due to the body being reliant upon burning carbohydrates for energy.
For example, if you’re eating a low fat diet, manufacturers often replace the removed fats with carbohydrates, like sugar or grains, which are used for quick energy. But these fillers also increase insulin levels.
However, if you’re fat adapted, then you’ll be using fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates.

How to take MCT Oil – Just Starting
1. Start off Slowly
If you’re just starting to take MCTs your best bet is to begin with a small dosage and slowly increase it every couple of days/week. This will ensure that you do not get an upset stomach from them as your body gets used to digesting these quickly absorbed fats.
Since they aren’t digested and are instead very quickly absorbed, and sent to your liver to do their job, MCTs can cause you to feel a little cramped and nauseous if you take too much at first. Some have also reported having loose bowels! Yes, folks, it means some have pooped their pants. I urge you to begin slowly!
So, instead of starting out taking an entire tablespoon all at once, take 1 teaspoon and wait an hour or two to see how you feel. Every day, slowly increase your dosage by ½-1 teaspoon at a time until you get to 1 tablespoon. This is possibly, all you need to take. At most you may want to add a 2nd tablespoon later in the day.
2. What to take with your MCT oil
Since it’s flavorless, you can take MCT oil off of a spoon. That’s my preference. You can also add it to your protein shakes and drizzle it onto foods. There are some great salad dressing recipes using MCT oil. It actually helps enhance the flavor of other foods which is why it’s used as a flavor enhancer and added to much of what we eat.
Another very popular way to take MCT oil is to blend it into your morning cup of coffee with or without grass fed butter.
I’ve tried this before too and find that it really does help extend the energy the caffeine in coffee provides while cutting out the jittery and nervousness than often comes with caffeine.
Foods That Taste Better With MCT Oil Added
- Dark chocolate
- Protein shakes
- Sushi – drizzle over and then eat with soy sauce or sea salt.
- Whipped cream
- Salad Dressing
3. When To Take MCT Oil
The timing of your daily dose of MCTs depends on your goals and/or needs. If you’re on a low carb diet and you want to give yourself a little extra energy and curb hunger and cravings, take it first thing in the morning and then every couple of hours during the day. This can be done with or without eating.
If you want a boost in your workout performance, take MCTs 20-30 minutes before you exercise. Research shows that this can increase the amount of time you’re able to exercise.
If you’re purely interested in curbing cravings and hunger pains, take your MCT oil 20-30 minutes before you eat. Doing this always helps me eat less and choose better foods to eat.
Looking to clear the cobwebs before you start working? Taking MCT oil can give you a boost of mental energy! It’s a trick I use when I can’t focus! Take it about 30 minutes before you decide to start working on your business!
4.How To Determine Your Daily MCT Oil Dosage
It is essential when you’re learning ‘how to take MCTs,’ to understand your dosage amount. The amount of MCTs you’ll need to take is dependent on your health, fitness level, and overall goals. If you’re using them to lose fat, get into nutritional ketosis, and/or make low carb dieting easier than 1-2 tablespoons taken 1-3 times a day is most likely enough.I use it, for example, when fasting! It really helps keep my mood even, and I don’t feel hungry. Which brings me to the next goal.
If you want to get into nutritional ketosis as quickly as possible, you may want to try intermittent fasting, where you spend 12-20 hours between meals. Taking 1-2 tablespoons after 3-4 hours during your fast will help you get into ketosis faster. Consequently, this enables your body to use the fat it has stored plus the ones you consume for energy.
5.How Will I Feel After Taking MCT Oil?
If you’re like me, my wife, and customers we get feedback from, you’ll feel a nice ‘buzz,’ energy increase and mental clarity within 30-60 minutes of taking your daily dose. If you’re starting out with smaller amounts it may not be as noticeable but still present.
I also always feel energized when I take my MCTs. They also really kill my cravings resulting in sticking to eating low carb/high fat diet more consistently. Until I started taking these awesome fats, I really struggled getting my cravings under control. MCT oil has given me freedom from sugary drinks, fast food, and cheap gas station candy and chips!
6.Which MCT Oil Supplement Is Best?
My choice for the best MCT Oil supplement is MCT Edge.
MCT Edge is my go-to when I want to add fat to my coffee and protein shakes. It makes both drinks really creamy and rich tasting. You can also blend it into puddings, Greek yogurt, and any other foods you love. MCT powder is also very heat stable so it can also be used for cooking your favorite foods. I like to use it when sauteing vegetables.
MCT Edge is the oil that I use as my source for pure ketone-making MCTs. It’s a great supplement to use if you prefer taking your MCT oil straight off a spoon or want to drizzle it over your food or blend with coffee and protein shakes. You can also cook with it since it is very stable at high temperatures.
Try sauteing vegetables in it to see for yourself. It makes them taste better than when cooked in other oils I’ve tried. Plus, you get an extra boost of energy from the ketones it helps your body make.
