If you are like me and find that overwhelming sugar cravings often ruin your diet and weight loss progress this article is for you. In it I describe in detail just how branch chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements can help you diminish and often times eliminate these cravings. This means no more giving in to foods like cookies, doughnuts, and pancakes in the middle of your diet. It also means you’ll be able to lose weight and excess faster and a lot easier. Keep reading and you’ll soon see what I mean.
How Branched Chain Amino Acids Stop Sugar Cravings
Research shows that there are 3 ways BCAAs can help diminish cravings for sugar foods. They are: by decreasing your appetite, keeping your blood sugar steady, and reducing cortsiol levels. Each benefit is explained in further detail below.
1. BCAAs Can Reduce Your Appetite
Studies show that branched chain amino acids can activate pathways in your brain that suppress your appetite. Taking a BCAA supplement post-workout or between meals may do the trick and help control your appetite so you experience less cravings and don’t binge between meals.
2. BCAAs Can Stabilize Your Blood Sugar
Eating foods that cause rapid increases and then drops in your blood sugar levels can trigger cravings. Your blood sugar levels can also swing up and down dramatically when you are adjusting to a low carbohydrate diet. These swings often lead to cravings for sugary foods like cookies and doughnuts. Taking a BCAA supplement on an empty stomach between meals when you are adapting to a low carb or Paleo diet and cutting out sugar can keep your blood sugar steady and cravings under control.
The reason BCAAs help here is that they are the building blocks of alanine and glutamine, the amino acids responsible for releasing blood sugar in your liver and muscles. Enabling your body to make more of these amino acids can keep your sugar levels stable.
3. BCAAs Reduce Cortisol Levels
The third way branched chain amino acids can prevent cravings is their ability to reduce elevated cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone that’s released during times of stress. Examples of situations that can increase cortisol levels are when you get into an argument, going a diet, and even working out.
Regardless of the cause, taking a BCAA supplement after working out or an otherwise stressful situation can help prevent cortisol levels from going too high and causing you to binge on a big stack of pancakes or pizza.
How To Control Your Cravings With BCAAs
The best times to take a branched chain amino supplement for craving control is after your workout and between meals. Taking them post-workout may help reduce exercise-induced increases in hunger and elevated cortisol levels. Using BCAAs between meals can have the same effect and help keep your blood sugar steady.
The most effective dosages appears to be between 5-10 grams per serving. The heavier you are, the larger the dose you may need. Generally speaking, if you weigh less than 150 pounds you’ll need to take 5 grams per serving. If you weigh more than 150 pounds you should start off with 10 grams of BCAAs in every serving. Taking these amounts will ensure you get the amounts found to be effective in scientific studies for your body weight.
Choosing A BCAA Supplement
There are dozens of powder and tablet based branched chain amino acids supplements currently available. Whether you choose to use a powder or tablet BCAA supplement, make sure it contains at least 5 grams per serving. The ratio of the 3 BCAAs leucine, isoleucine, and valine in your supplement should be at least double the amount of leucine than other 2 amino acids. The more leucine per serving the better. This is because it has the most benefit of the 3 branched chain amino acids.
If you prefer to use a powder, which I find to be most convenient, I recommend Met Rx BCAA powder. It mixes easily in water and gives you 5 grams per serving. It’s also available in 3 different flavors: blue raspberry, plain, and watermelon.
Those of you who prefer to take a BCAA in tablet form, Gapari BCAA 6000 is the best choice. The reason I say this is that every serving contains contains 6 grams of BCAAs. Most other capsule or tablet BCAA supplements contain half as much per dose.
Another reason I recommend BCAA 6000 is that it contains more leucine than most products. Most branched chain amino supplements have 2 grams of leucine per serving. BCAA 6000 contains 4 grams, making it perhaps the most powerful BCAA supplement on the market.
