Stayfitcentral: What supplements did you use to make adjusting to a low carbohydrate diet easier?
Jimmy Moore: Honestly, when I first started losing weight in 2004, I mainly took a good multivitamin in conjunction with my high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb lifestyle change. With my reliance on a very poor diet to sustain me up until that point in my life, consuming the kind of foods that kept my blood sugar and insulin levels controlled for perhaps the first time in my entire life was the key to my weight and health turnaround.
Towards the end of my 180-pound low-carb weight loss experience, I learned the importance of getting other key supplements that would aid my health, including vitamin D, fish oil, chromium, CoQ10, probiotics and magnesium which have all been a regular part of my routine ever since. I sometimes dibble-dabble in a new supplement here and there to see what impact it will have on my health. The key is striving to get most of your nutrition from quality food sources that are grass-fed, pastured and organic as much as possible and supplementing where there are deficiencies.
Stayfitcentral: Did you take anything to help with your mood, cravings, energy, focus, etc.?
Jimmy Moore: You know, that’s the beauty of eating an optimally healthy, nutrient-dense diet like low-carb, high-fat–you notice that all of those things just seem to work themselves out. Your mood improves because your brain is getting the fat it needs to thrive instead of starving for nutrition like it can when you follow a low-fat, high-carb diet. Cravings are non-existent too because you consume deliciously satisfying foods like full-fat meats and cheeses that keep hunger and the need to munch garbage at bay. And if you wanna know about energy and focus, I’ve been eating this way for eight years and counting and have never had this much drive and determination in my life to spread a message more than I am with livin’ la vida low-carb right now. It’s life-changing!
Stayfitcentral: Does your wife follow a low carbohydrate diet too?
Jimmy Moore: She wasn’t as strict as I was at first because she’s always been skinny. But when she discovered she had triglycerides that were nearly 300 (normal is between 150 to 199 mg/dL), that woke her up to the fact that she was metabolically obese and needed to eat a high-fat, low-carb diet to improve her lipid health. Within six weeks of eating this way, she dropped her triglycerides into the 130’s and today they stand at a stunning level of just 46. She’s been hardcore low-carb Paleo with me since August 2011.
Stayfitcentral: What did you do to break through weight loss plateau’s?
Jimmy Moore: Plateaus are completely normal when you are losing weight and unnecessarily derail a lot of people from attaining the success they would have had if they had just stuck with the program. I experienced a 10-week stall in 2004 when I was losing weight on Atkins and I just kept working the plan. Something pretty amazing happened–although I didn’t lose a single pound in those ten weeks, I lost six inches off of my waist. So much for caring about what the scale says anymore! Nowadays, I emphasize how my clothes feel and what my general health and well-being is like over the scale any day. Stayfitcentral: What or who was your biggest source of inspiration to start with the diet?
Jimmy Moore: My mother-in-law bought me Dr. Atkins new diet revolution for Christmas in 2003 and I am indebted to her for introducing me to the high-fat, low-carb nutritional principles. Of course, she’d purchased me diet books before, but this one kinda stuck. Although I never met him in person, I am so thankful for the foresight of Dr. Robert C. Atkins to share what he learned about low-carb diets with the world. I met his widow Veronica Atkins in 2006 and personally thanked her for how much her husband meant to me. My wife Christine was also an instrumental part of my success for sticking with me as a 400+ pound man to the radically different healthy and athletic man I am today. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the role my faith in God played in sustaining me through this difficult yet rewarding experience.
Stayfitcentral: Do you take fish oil supplements and if so, have they helped you lose fat or reduce cravings
Jimmy Moore: Yes, I take Carlson’s liquid fish oil as part of my supplementation routine and it’s an essential step in restoring the balance of omega-3 essential fatty acids with the overabundance of omega-6.
