Personal Trainer Matt McGrorry’s Favorite Pre-Workout Supplement

Choosing the right pre-workout meal and supplement to take depends on many factors including: the type of workout you are doing, how you feel after taking certain supplements – especially stimulants like caffeine -, how easily you digest your meals, and more. Learning what supplements other people take can help you make the right decision. This is especially true when they have a lot of experience in this area. We’ve done the legwork for you and asked several fitness, nutrition, and supplement experts “Is there a type of pre-workout supplement, drink or meal that you rely on for energy before you train?” After reading their replies you too should know which type of product is best for your needs and goals.

Today’s answer is courtesy of strength coach Matt McGorry. Matt is a New York City based personal trainer and fitness author. His articles have been published in various publications including Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health, and T-Nation.com. He is also an accomplished powerlifter with competition bests of 308lb bench press and 573lb deadlift in the 198lb class. Matt’s Answer:
I start almost every lifting workout either with a Starbucks coffee about half hour in advance. I enjoy the taste, but the more important thing is it’s higher caffeine when compared to most other brands of coffee. If I’m on the run, I’ll sub out the coffee for a Speed Stack (from ABB), as I find it gives me a solid level of non-jittery energy. 10-30 minutes before the workout and throughout, I’ll sip on a BCAA and water mix that includes either SciVation Xtend or Modern BCAA. What I like about the latter is it’s simplicity and it has less artificial coloring and ingredients than most other mixable BCAA products on the market.
